Betancuria

The history of Betancuria is nothing less than fascinating.

Although very little has been written about it, it is the subject of many local legends.

What we do know for sure is that Jean de Bethencourt, a famous explorer from Normandy France, laid claim to the island in 1402.

Before that year Fuerteventura had a rich history, much of which still remains a mystery today.

At the time of the conquest there were two kings ruling the island, one for the South and one for the North.

Statues of these two kings are one of the first things to welcome you to Betancuria

Location of Betancuria

Betancuria is located in the heart of the island of Fuerteventura in a valley surrounded by many hills.

This makes the view spectacular and the nested village of Betancuria idyllic.

This was a military strategy of the founder of Betancuria, Jean de Bethencourt who wanted to protect himself and his troops from the constant pirate attacks on the coast.

From their location in Betancuria they had a lot of warning before an attack.

The legacy of Betancuria

This village is home to the oldest most historic building on the island due to its history.

The church is what draws many visitors to this small village.

Right behind the church is where you will find Casa Princess Arminda.

This 600 year old estate is said to be where Bethencourt's troops built a fortress.

The palace of Jean de Bethencourt is the talk of legends.

Some say it was located right beside what is today Casa Princess Arminda and it burned down in the pirate attacks.

Others say their treasures are still buried in underground tunnels linking the church to where the palace once stood.
