In 1404 a famous French explorer from Normandy, Jean de Bethencourt, landed on the majestical island of Fuerteventura in the Atlantic Ocean.  Bethencourt travelled to the centre of the island up into the mountains to reach a safe haven and built a magnificent church, castle and fortress in typical conquerer style.

Depite continous attacks in the 16th century and extensive damage, the historic church and fortress still stand today.

The fortress of Jean de Bethencourt, for whom the town of Betancuria was named after, has been passed down generation after generation for the past 600 years.

Today this 600 year old historic estate still remains with Canary Island locals, the Gonzalez Dumpierrez family.

Six centuries after its creation, this magnificent locale has been transformed into Casa Srs Saavedra, beginning another chapter of history.

This house was known for many years as the House of the Seņores Saavedra. The last territorial Lady of Fuerteventura and also heiress of this hose was Doņa Elena Sebastiana Benitez de lugo Arias de Saavedra Urtusantegui Monteverde.
